Biography

The history of Neuronia begins with Michal “Misiek” Rogala, the band’s guitarist and the first drummer – Lukasz “Chief” Szewczyk, who began jamming together in December 2003. Two years later, Radoslaw Szewczuk joined on vocals and bass and the first line–up of Neuronia was complete. From the very first rehearsals the band played a unique blend of rock’n’roll and metal. The first half of 2006 was a very industrious time for the band with the recording of two demo EP’s – “Neuronia” and “Wedding Day”. In spite of that, Radoslaw left the band in October of the same year.
He was replaced by two unique musicians – Dominik “Domo” Beska on bass and Tomasz “Acid” Nowak on vocals. Changes in the line-up resulted in a heavy alteration of the band’s sound, which became heavier and more dynamic. The third demo EP – “First Blood” – recorded in the fall of 2006 and issued in 2007, was the harbinger of Neuronia’s new style. Minor acclaim from the critics spurred an increase in concert activity, including playing at a few major Polish festivals. In 2007 the band concentrated on writing new material and recording their debut album in Warsaw’s DBX Studio.
The album, titled”The Winter of My Heart” was released on February 29th 2008. Nationwide distribution was handled by Fonografika – the publishers of debut albums of such great bands as Rootwater and So I Scream. In March and June two videos for “Psycho” and “Demon’s Kiss” were subsequently realized by Wroclaw-based DWAEM Media Group. Both were heavily promoted in Polish music TV channels, such as MTV Poland and 4FunTV. The album garnered positive reviews from major Polish music media. The band spent the most of 2008 promoting the new album with many gigs, some of them alongside such bands as Lizzie Borden, Torture Squad or Polish death metal legends Pandemonium.
2009 brought more changes in the line-up – pivotal to the development of the band’s sound. In the spring Lukasz Szewczyk was replaced on drums by Michal “Thor” Pasternak, whose technical skills and expression have brought a new quality to the sound of Neuronia. Throughout the year, gigs were few – the band concentrated on the creation of material for the second album. But the band played an important show at the infamous, yet influential Hunterfest festival in July and a mini-tour of two concerts alongside German thrash veterans, Tankard, in November. Just before these two shows another worthy addition was made to Neuronia’s line-up – Maciek “Tektur” Nawrot joined on vocals, with his singing skills fitting the band’s musical style very well.

In the fall of 2009 the band recorded its second album “Follow the White Mouse” in DBX Studio. Maciek Nawrot took over the lead vocals on this recording and assumed the main vocal duties in February 2010, with Tomasz “Acid” Nowak leaving the band due to creative differences over the direction of Neuronia’s musical development. The newest addition to the line-up is Rafal “Lewy” Lewandowski – an extremely talented and experienced lead guitarist, who joined in January 2010 and enriched the sound of Neuronia with blasting guitar solos and extraordinary melodic parts.
The new album was released in Poland by Fonografika on March 20th, followed by numerous gigs all over Poland, supporting major Polish and foreign artists (e.g. Paul Di’Anno, Sabaton, Corruption, Quo Vadis). In January 2011, the band signed a contract with the Ukrainian label Metal Scrap Records, securing the worldwide release and distribution of “Follow The White Mouse”. The album is set for international release in early spring of 2011.

ATMOSFEAR #8

No sooner had sounding the final notes of Poles QUO VADIS and CRYPTIC on a tour of Ukraine, as Metal Scrap Records label released a CD of another Polish band. Whether all the bands in Poland, such original or the label has a taste by selecting unusual band, but the fact remains and we couldn’t pass NEURONIA. Here are vocalist Tektur and guitarist Misiek in touch with us.

Interview was prepared by Neophyte.
Answering: Maciek „Tektur” Nawrot (vocal), Michal „Misiek” Rogala (guitar)

1)Hi! First, let us recall the main moments in the life of the band. Such as the year of creation, who did it and most importantly why did he do it? And which bands or something else all this affected?

Misiek (guitar): And you’ll be healthy! I created a band, together with my friend Lukash in 2003. I’ve always wanted to play music, music – this is my life. From the very beginning we wanted to create our own recognizable style. What bands have influenced us? It is certainty such as: Metallica, Slayer, System of a Down or Morgoth but not alien to us were lighter, more psychedelic sounding bands, for example: Porno for Pyros, The Doors and of course Led Zeppelin .
Among the most important events in the history of the band, above all I can say the releasing of two full-length albums. We also played as well over a hundred concerts, the most significant of which for me are: Hunterfest 2009, a concert with Lizzy Borden in 2009 and Paul di’Anno in Lublin in the past year. From the “newest” history it is worth to distinguish stabilization of the band line-up in 2011. At the moment we play in this line-up: Lewy (guitar), Beton (bass), Deviant (drums), Tektur (vocals) and me.

2)What after all are you playing? Here are so many different styles and some of them is difficult to relate to the metal. How would you call your style?

Tektur (vocals): Oh, it’s hard to describe it. Themselves sometimes we call it “chaos metal”. Not tolerate inspiration solely from metal music; there are so many different styles of music that has nothing to limit you. Not just by metal person lives.
Misiek: With this “chaos metal” you hit the jackpot. Basically we are “playing” with the music, try to make it a versatile, do not want to stand still.

3)”Follow The White Mouse” is your second album. The first one I did not hear, so tell me what you’ve played there and how it differs from what is playing now?

Tektur: Personally, I will not say much because I did not participate in recording this album, except to say that the difference is very large. I’ll tell you exactly that the previous album was less melodic than his successor, but had a lot of climate, richness, darkness.
Misiek: Both of our albums are very different from each other, because they were recording by two very different line-ups. During the recording of “Follow …” the band joined Tektur and a new drummer Thor (left the band in January 2011). Tektur’s vocal brought a lot to our creation, especially it concerns the melody and charisma. Maciek (Tektur – Auth.) is a champion of inventing fucking melodies.

4)Polish metal scene is very diverse, but the most popular outside of Poland got the band playing death metal. Does that mean that death metal is the predominant style in Poland?

Tektur: Polish death metal has a high reputation. But I would not say that it is now the leading style in Poland. There are many bands playing thrash and even more play black metal. And those classic metal is also missing. Death metal from Poland just more noticeable because of the border, but in fact here we have a diverse scene.

5)Your countrymen from QUO VADIS and CRYPTIC this year swept round by Ukraine. Do you any desire to go in their footsteps and present your music to our listeners?

Tektur: With great pleasure! Unless we get something organized in conjunction with Metal Scrap Records, then just come to Ukraine. It would be our first overseas trip, before we are playing only in Poland, because of what it would be very exciting for us.

6)Recently, some Ukrainian bands had a tour at Poland and noted the low attendance at concerts. Are the Polish fans poorly attended underground concerts, or is it just for our bands so bad coming from? How many people gather monsters from VADER, BEHEMOTH at home and how many people come to concerts NEURONIA?

Tektur: Unfortunately, this is a sore point for many Polish bands. While it may be such bands as VADER, BEHEMOTH or a legend like KAT do not worry about it – VADER can gather in a large concert 1000 fans, BEHEMOTH can fill even the capacity of clubs in 2000 persons. At underground gigs all much, much sadder – often bands play for barely-dozens of visitors, though happen the big exception. At the least-visited our concert came once 25 people and the biggest play in support of Paul’s Di’Anno – more than 1,000 visitors, at least.
Misiek: There are problems with visits to the shows because in Poland comes a lot of Western “stars.” In Warsaw, for example, the audience was very spoiled because almost every day we have fucking great concerts. After that, nobody wants to go to a concert of unknown bands. This is the biggest problem for bands in Warsaw and throughout Poland.

7)At the photo in the booklet for the album “Follow the white mouse” there is 5 people, but on the same page is written that there’re 6 people in line-up. Who is not in the photo and where did he go?

Tektur: Since the recording of the album the line-up had changed. At the photo is missing Lewyj, which has not participated in the recording of the album, but we decided to leave it in the list, because until then he has been an integral part of the band. From line-up who recorded the album now left only me and Misiek.

8)Also the booklet contains information that you have two vocalists. It is only on the record or in concert too?

Tektur: Only on the album. During several shows in 2010 we tried to play with two vocalists, but we do not come off. Acid (second vocalist) left in March last year, we had could not agree on the account of the subsequent musical style. But now at the concerts are the new second voice, “do” it Beton and his growling is very suitable to what we play.

9)Why are you staying with Ukrainian label Metal Scrap Records? Were there other offers and what influenced your choice?

Tektur: We were looking for a publisher outside of Poland and saw Metal Scrap released album of Quo Vadis. Asked Skaya (leader of the Quo Vadis) about the terms of releasing – he advised us Metal Scrap Records and within a few days we have been in contact. Our choice was also influenced by the fact that this label is not new on the scene, they are experienced publishers and have a wide distribution network throughout the world. We are pleased that we were under the wing of a decent label, which deals with our promotion and distribution.

10)Recommend to our readers some Polish acts that we are not yet known, but which play great music.

Tektur: Well then under the first “fire” includes a bands of two dudes, Beton and Deviant – both play in MESMERIZED, whose leader from the very beginning (1997) is the Beton. This band plays crushing brutal death metal in a very rapid pace. Recently they released their second CD “Antihuman Inferno”, which I highly recommend to all. Deviant is also in the capital of grindcore / rock’and’roll ANUS MAGULO – last year they released their first album “Chain Erection”, as well as in AT THE LAKE playing gothic metal.
Besides of them I want to emphasize CONQUEST ICON – old school death metal with a mixture of black metal from Warsaw; EMPTY PLAYGROUND – horror / industrial / death from Poznan; THE NO-MADS – a killer thrash from Silesia. I really like the crossover thrash band CREMASTER, although this seems to me known in the Ukraine. If someone like the sound of MACHINE HEAD, then it necessarily will like Warsaw CHAIN REACTION. Fans of progressive metal, no doubt, appreciate the young team DISPERSE. If someone likes the eastern climates in the spirit of BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, then he would be recommend to listen LEASH EYE (guys just record a new album). Also recommend instrumental doom MAJOR KONG from my hometown Lublin. Now, I think it is clear that Poland is not only a death metal.
Misiek: Personally, I would recommend to Ukrainian fans TIDES FROM NEBULA – very different, interesting, psychedelic-progressive climate, but very fucking great music, this year released a new album. From a pure metal bands I’m fucking liking MOUGA – very modern music, at concerts their energy and sound reminiscent of THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN.

Answered Maciek “Tektur” Nawrot (NEURONIA – vocals)

1.Hi! Recently the band released a new EP called “Insanity Relapse”. Can you tell, what will be waiting the listeners on this EP for those who still have not heard this release?
Maciek “Tektur” Nawrot (vocals): Hell-o! Well, the new EP is the most melodic thing we have recorded in ages, but also – in my opinion – harder and better player than on the last album. There’s melodic death metal, heavy metal solos and a little bit of blast beats here and there, but also some mid-tempo riffs that are really interesting. I think that it’s a diverse piece of music and we have drawn from many inspirations. And I’ve tried to make the lyrics interesting, telling not only about the problems of the world today, but also our own ones.

2.EP format is not very popular today. So, why did you decide to record this EP? Can we consider this EP a prelude to your next full-length release, or this EP – it is an independent creative unit?
Not so much as a prelude, but definitely a hint about the direction in which we are heading as a band. I guess that the next album will sound similarly, but of course we will try new things on the next release, as we always do. We want to record and release our third album next year, which will also mark the tenth anniversary of the band. That said, this EP is a closed and independent creative unit and we don’t want to replicate any of the tracks from it on the forthcoming album.

3.What means the name of the second track – 3:33 03:33??
Well, it HAS a name – 3:33 is an hour. Sometimes we wake up in the night, tortured by insomnia. My friend from my hometown of Lublin used to wake up at strange hours in the night – 2:22, 3:33, 4:44… This hour came to me as a symbol of insomnia, which can have very strange and ill effects on the mind of the person affected by it. The title was first – then we’ve decided to cut the track down to 3 minutes and 33 seconds, just as a joke!

4.How do you plan to promote your music? What goals do you want to reach?
We do a lot of promotion by ourselves, but a lot of people help us – Robert from Psycho Records, Joel from Infektion Records (Portugal), and of course Natalya and Anatoliy from Metal Scrap Records, whom you surely know. We released this new EP on the Internet, just to get a lot of feedback and see if people catch on to our new sound. We also use social media quite a lot – not only Facebook, but also Twitter, Last.fm, ReverbNation and any other thing we can get our hands on. Internet is a very important medium for promotion right now and you have to keep up with what’s going on on the web.

5.As for our goals – fame, fortune and stardom! 🙂 No, just joking, but we do want to be internationally recognized and show our music on gigs abroad. Of course, we would like to get a professional contract with a big label and tour extensively, but there is still a lot of work to be done to achieve that.
There are many musical styles mixed in your music. Some listeners may get the impression that you just cannot decide what and how you want play. What can you say to that?
Plain and simple – if you want to experience our music to the fullest, keep an open mind. We don’t want to limit our creativity in any way. That’s how you create interesting music these days – trying to merge different styles and influences. Of course, there will be always plenty of room for bands who play a certain “old-school” style and do it great, but we don’t want to be known as a band copies one style. Mixing genres is great and it gives the scene a breath of fresh air.

6.This stylistic diversity is fraught with excesses in one side or another. There should be a sense of proportion. When comes a sense of proportion and understanding that this is where something good and fit and something does not fit?
Hmm… I guess when we do the arrangements. Sometimes we stop playing and start thinking: “no, this part is too long, it will be boring”, “this solo is too outrageous for this track”, “the vocal line here doesn’t fit, you’ve got to sing it another way” and so on. At the same time, sometimes we see that the track is a one-way song and we try to diversify it by adding on other tunes.

7.When you write music, do you plan in advance how the song would sound? Or the writing process is spontaneous?
No, it’s totally spontaneous, we combine some riffs and every member of the band takes part in the process. First, we combine the riffs with drum rhythms, and then we overlay the solos and vocal parts… It’s like we say: “OK, this riff is good, this beat is good – let’s see where it leads us!” And after that, we spend a lot of time on the arrangements to polish the final sound – and it’s then when we see how it sounds in the end:).

8.As far as I know, the band exists since 1993, but you released not too many albums. What is the cause of this and are you going to catch up this fail in the nearest years?
Oh, you’re too generous for us:). We’re around from 2003, and as for the period of the last 9 years, the material we have released is maybe not too big, but not too small either. Of course, with our new line-up, we will try to record more and more material.

9.In the early years of NEURONIA, the band chased the permanent changes of the line-up. Now the line-up stabilized. Would you like to keep the current line-up as long as possible, or you allow changes of the line-up in future?
We would very much like for it to stay as it is. It’s the best line-up the band has ever had – in my opinion – and we should stick to it. Nobody knows the future, but if we keep our heads straight, we should remain in this line-up for long years. In the past, we didn’t always understand each other, but now the atmosphere really “clicks” together.

10.Does have group members common musical predilections, and how often disputes arise in the process of writing music?
Not very often. Of course, we all have our own influences and they are very diverse, but there aren’t a lot of quarrels or disputes. Sometimes we have doubts about this or that part, but we try to settle it all amicably.

11.Which bands had the greatest influence on you? I mean, not in terms of the influence of style, but in terms of creative approach to writing music. Even if the style of these bands is different from yours.
Oh, it’s so difficult to say, there are so many… But if you ask about creative approach, I would like to name a few very different bands: Death, The Mars Volta, Kvelertak, Queen, Radiohead, Slayer, Sarcofago, Mayhem, Captain Beefheart, Ulver, Muse, Gojira, Kyuss, Baroness… there really are too many to name in such a short interview.

12.Can you name your top 5 albums of all time?
Gah! This is a very difficult question, as I have so many favorite albums! Why not 20, or 50? But I will try…
Slayer – Seasons in the Abyss
Muse – Origin of Symmetry
The Beatles – Abbey Road
Motorhead – Ace of Spades
Kvelertak – Kvelertak
And a bonus one: Turbonegro – Ass Cobra

13.Do you think there will ever be a day when you will be able to earn enough money just by playing music?
I would very much like that, but given the current situation on the market, I have no great hopes for it. The era when even lesser known bands made good money with their music, has ended together with the 90’s. Now, there are limited options for metal bands, especially in Poland. It would be nice to have some profits from the music, but it’s the passion that keeps us going, not the money.

14.Is there a concert stage, on which you would most like to play a show? (It’s like “No Sleep ’til Hammersmith” with MOTORHEAD).
Oh, I would very much like to play at the Hammersmith Odeon! Other places where I would very much like to play is the House of Blues in Chicago, Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany, the Fillmore in San Francisco, Backstage in Munich, Tuska Open Air in Finland and many more. I wish that they would organize the Monsters of Rock festival, but that probably won’t happen again…

15.Often heard the idea that in rock music and metal everything has already been played, and to play something new is no longer possible. How can you comment on that?
Utter bullshit:). Of course, it’s hard to record something new and innovative, but some bands really accomplish it and with style. Take a look at Kvelertak’s debut album – sure, it all has been played before, but never so greatly intertwined and mixed together. Check out bands like The Mars Volta or Baroness, Gorod, Gojira or Obscura – there are new possibilities, it’s just that not many bands think of them 🙂

16.You are watching the events on the EURO-2012? What do you think about all this hysteria?
Well, it surely is a big event and it does a great job in promoting both our countries, but I think it’s taken a bit too far. The amount of money spent on the stadiums, the fuss in the media, the difficulties in traveling in the host cities… well, it’s all just too much. Let’s be happy that the world has seen us, but also that it’s over for now. And I am really a bit sad that Italy didn’t win the final… it’s my favorite foreign national team. At least Shevchenko got two goals! He’s been one of my favorite footballers since the time he arrived in AC Milan.

17.What alcohol do you prefer and what do you think about as fashionable now in rock music straight edge? As for me, all of these straight edgers, vegans etc. are idiots…
Good question! Beer is my poison of choice, and I like many brands. My favorite one is Per?a Chmielowa from my hometown of Lublin, but I also enjoy a wide range of other Polish beers and some foreign ones: Carlsberg, Newcastle Brown Ale, Karhu from Finland, San Miguel from Spain… various ones. I also like Ukrainian beers like Slavutych, Obolon etc., but for me the best Ukrainian beer is Lvivskye Premium. I also like whiskey and bourbon on the rocks with a bit of water.
As for straight-edge and vegans – it’s just parts of the punkrock and hardcore culture merging into other scenes. If one wants to steer clear of alcohol and meat, it’s their decision – live and let live. I’ve tried it myself, even. During my punk days, I was a vegetarian for almost three years and a straight-edge for six months. But it wasn’t such a great experience 🙂 and it’s in the past now. The only thing that pisses me off are “hard-line” proselytes, who want to punish other people for drinking alcohol or eating meat. Fuck them, it’s like fascism…

18.So the final word from the band at the end of the interview. Maybe something was left unsaid?
Final word? Well, thanks for the interview, and many greetings to all your readers! Support your local scene, go to concerts and help new bands to make it big. As for our plans for the future – we are preparing the material for our new record for next year, so… watch out! METAL AND HELL!

Answering Lukas (drums), Tektur (vocals)

1) How did you guys hook up and form NEURONIA?
Lukas (drums): The band was formed by the end of 2003 by Misiek who till this day remains as a sole funding member. The band recorded two EP’s and one LP called “Winter of My Heart”. Then, after couple of line-up changes, Tektur joined the band – actually he was supposed to be the 2nd guitarist, but it turned out he was a much better vocalist than the Neuronia’s then-singer so he eventually took over the vocals.
With this line-up, the band recorded 2nd LP “Follow the white mouse” and shortly after, lead guitarist Lewy joined. Then, in 2011 when the previous bassist left the band, the guys contacted Beton who shortly after became a member of Neuronia. Beton was actually the one who called me about joining Neuronia in 2012, because we knew each other – we shared rehearsal space with our other bands – Mesmerized and Whichheaven. And thus the present incarnation of Neuronia was born 🙂

2) For those who haven’t listened to NEURONIA yet, how would you describe your sound?
Lukas: Well, it’s metal and as the great Chuck Schuldiner said “metal is metal”, so that would be my first answer. But there are so many different subgenres within metal that inspire us that it is really difficult to pinpoint the exact type. The sound is just a mixture of our influences, ranging from classic heavy metal, through death metal, melodic metal to hard rock. Like I said – it’s a weird mixture, but I guess it works!
Tektur (vocals): Misiek once said that we play “neurometal”, that our band has a sound of its own. Weirdly enough, when I listen to our recordings, this seems to be true. The band has mixed up a lot of influences since the beginning. That’s why reviewers sometimes have issues with our music, it defies labels and I’m proud of that For me the most important elements of our sound is a thrashy edge combined with melodies.

3) How do you usually approach the songwriting process?
Lukas: The process is pretty standard. We always start with a riff. Whether it would be a guitar or a bass riff. Then we add another layers and textures, try different stuff out – rhythms or harmonies and melodies. When we agree upon the structure of the song, we start to rehearse it and see if everything works. Usually the vocals come last and they fill the whole greater picture.
Tektur: You forgot to tell about the part where we yell at each other in the rehearsal space. “That’s too loud! That won’t fit here! That’s too slow! What kind of a riff is that!” Yes, the arrangement process comes with lots of fun But I guess that if you’re passionate about the music, it has to be this way. We have worked our asses off in the rehearsal room for the last three years and we’re very proud of the upcoming album.

4) After releasing some cool records, you have released the latest DIGITAL EP “Insanity relapse” in 2012, how was the whole process of making it?
Lukas: The whole process of making Insanity Relapse was pretty fast. After I joined, guys had some basic structures for 2 songs that needed working on. We did that and came up with two brand new songs and just as we finished that we had the studio booked. The recording process went pretty smoothly, we did the whole EP in a couple of days at the Progresja Studio. Started with drums, then recorded bass and guitars and vocals – everything done by the book
Tektur: That was a quick recording session indeed I was coming down from a flu and, as it was spring, my allergies started to flare up. One of the two most difficult days in the band, I have to say.

5) Three years have passed since this release, what about a new one?
Lukas: Glad that you’ve asked! We’ve just completed the recording and mixing our latest LP “Under the Same Sky”. It contains 11 tracks of our speciality – a mixture of fast, heavy and melodic metal. We have just put a trailer up on our YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/user/NeuroniaOfficial) and in a couple of days we’re gonna put two new songs up for everyone to listen. So check it out – if you liked “Insanity Relapse”, you will surely love this one.
Tektur: Like I said above – we’ve worked very hard on our new album and we’ve had great help from our producer – Heinrich. You might know him, as when he’s not in the studio, he plays bass in two quite well-known Polish bands – Vesania and Masachist. The sound of the new album is killer – watch out, it will kick your ass!

6) Are you guys currently working on a new material?
Lukas: As I mentioned above, the material is ready for release. We’re looking for a dependable label and are ready to start promoting it!
Tektur: Yeah, give us a break, we’ve barely left the studio from recording our last one!

7) What are your three favorite songs from NEURONIA and why?
Lukas: It is hard to pick three, but if I had to, it would be “Alone in the Dark” from “Insanity Relapse” plus “An Elegy” and “Good Clean Fun” from the latest LP “Under the Same Sky”. “Alone in the Dark” is kind of special, ‘cause it was the first song that we actually wrote together with this line-up. Besides, it’s got great melodies, a cool chorus and a lots of double bass that I like The two new songs, “An Elegy” and “Good Clean Fun” are two that kind of stand out (for me at least), although both are completely different. “An Elegy” is slower, almost a power ballad (but in a good sense) – it’s got killer vocal hooks and great guitar harmonies. “Good Clean Fun” starts with an intro that leads into a rhythm section part that slowly builds up to a pretty fast, thrashy song. Also, it’s fun to play and I hope people will like it – especially live.
Tektur: I’ve got to give you that – “Good Clean Fun” is a killer, fast-paced thrash metal piece with absolutely no brakes and possibly the heaviest track I’ve laid down so far. But my all-time favorite of ours dates back to 2008, when I wasn’t in the band yet – it’s the “March of the Damned” from the first album. I don’t know why, but I just love this track – its simplicity, primal energy and groove just speak to me and I very much like performing it live. The third one would for sure be “Moon Over Providence” from “Insanity Relapse” – it has this ghoulish, Lovecraft-esque feel, and when I heard it for the first time, I knew that the lyrics I was going to write were going to be Lovecraftian too.

8) Could you compare musically your first demo “Neuronia” (2005) with the latest DIGITAL EP “Insanity Relapse”?
Lukas: Well, to me they’re two completely different worlds – the new songs are mature, have a distinctive sound, many different layers of melodies and harmonies. Also, the vocals are different – sometimes they’re clean, sometimes thrashy and in some songs they have almost a Middle-Eastern influence, so it’s a completely different vibe. I would say it’s an evolution thing – many years have passed and we’ve just found our style.
Tektur: You can quote me on that, too. Plus, since we play with two guitars now, there are a lot more solos and melodies than in the band’s beginnings.

9) What does this “Insanity Relapse” represent to you?
Lukas: “Insanity Relapse” represents all the crazy shit that happens around us. Whether it’s greed, hate or war – even if we are not subjected to it directly, they are still present. Just watch the news or look at the headlines – there isn’t a day or even an hour when something totally insane doesn’t happen. It’s pretty sad, but it seems that humanity is slowly degrading and the stuff that we talk about in our songs are just an observation of the present state of human beings.

10) How is the music scene in your area? Are there any new bands that we should listen to?
Lukas: The music scene in our area is doing ok. Lots of cool bands, especially in more extreme types of metal, but the thing is that there aren’t many new bands, which is kind of a shame.
Tektur: The Warsaw metropolitan music scene is very diversified and I can give you a few hints. You’ve got thrash metal (i.e. Testor), heavy metal (Dragon’s Eye, Night Mistress), hard rock (Leash Eye), power metal (Exlibris), thrashcore (Lostbone), death metal (Hate, Centurion, Pyorrhoea, Gortal, Thunderwar, Hell Patrol), black metal (Vesania, Empheris, Bestiality), stoner rock (Major Kong, Dopelord – both bands moved from my hometown of Lublin)… There is a lot going on, though I have to say that the majority of the known bands aren’t so new. Take Testor or Hate for instance – both have been here for what seems forever. The current musical climate is tough on young bands. Big clubs and promotors are not keen to take newcomers on to support big acts, pay-to-play is getting more and more prevalent too… Yet, for instance Bestiality or Thunderwar are comprised of very young guys who are already making a name for themselves on the Polish scene.

11) Are you planning some shows for this summer?
Lukas: The Summer is almost over so we’re starting to promote “Under the Same Sky” at the start of September. We have been kind of quiet lately mainly due to the recording and mixing process that can be long for 11 songs But everything is ready and we hope to get it going in a matter of days.

12) Anything you would like to add to end the interview?
Lukas: Thanks for support and be sure to check out our latest LP “Under the Same Sky”. The trailer is already available on our YouTube channel ( www.youtube.com/user/NeuroniaOfficial) and the new songs are about to be put up as well. Keep it metal!!!
Tektur: Support your local scene and keep the metal brotherhood alive! It doesn’t matter if you’re a black metal fan, a “stoner hippie”, a heavy metal beerbelly or a death metal freak – we are all brothers! Cheers!

Answering: Maciek „Tektur” Nawrot (vocal)

1. Hello, thanks for answering to our questions. What are you guys currently up to?
Tektur (vocals): Hey, thanks for the questions, we are always happy to answer! Right now, we are preparing new material – we want to record our third album next year, it will mark the 10th anniversary of our band’s existence. We have also shot some scenes for a video clip for ‘Alone in the Dark’, the first track of our latest release, the clip is bound to have a premiere very soon, so remember to check our YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/user/NeuroniaOfficial.

2. First off, could you make some history of the band?
T: Neuronia was founded in December 2003 by Misiek (guitar) and Chief (drums). This was mostly a rock jam-band at the time. In 2005 Radek joined on bass and vocals. This line-up recorded two demos: ‘Neuronia’ and ‘Wedding Day’ in 2006. At this time, the band played metal-influenced rock music.
Radek left the band in the same year and was replaced by Domo on bass and Acid on vocals. It was then when the band shifted towards heavier and darker sounds. The 2007 ‘First Blood’ promo EP and the 2008 debut album ‘The Winter of My Heart’ reflected that change.
We have had major line-up changes from 2009 and 2011 – Lewy joined us on lead guitar, we changed drummers three times (subsequently Thor, Deviant and Lukas), Beton replaced Domo on bass guitar and I’m doing lead vocals since Acid left in 2011. In 2010, our second album ‘Follow the White Mouse was released, with a more melodic sound.
Right now, we have stabilized our line-up with Misiek on rhythm guitar, Lewy on lead guitar, Beton on bass and backing vocals, Lukas on drums and me on lead vocals. We have released our latest EP ‘Insanity Relapse’ in May 2012 – it can be downloaded for free from our BandCamp site, Last.fm etc.
During all these years we have played many gigs with bands like Sodom, Tankard, Sabaton, Paul di’Anno, Lizzie Borden, Torture Squad, KAT, Corruption, Quo Vadis and many others.

3. How could you describe your sound?
T: It is kind of hard to describe it, as we are influenced by various genres and bands. I would say that it is a mixture of classic heavy metal melody with the energy of thrash with a little melodic death metal on the side… but I wouldn’t be telling the whole truth. There are black metal blasts, there are doom metal moments, psychedelia… It’s really hard to classify our sound.

4. What are the band’s main musical influences?
T: Oh, this is a very hard question, because there are so many! Misiek likes classic thrash, psychedelia and punk rock. I am from a punk rock background myself, but I listen to lots of good music, from classical music to black metal. Beton is a death metal freak, but he also listens to lots of progressive music and loves Pink Floyd. Lewy loves classic rock, but also thrash and progressive metal. Lukas really listens to all kinds of metal music.
If I would have to tell you all the band names, this interview would take me all day… and more! : )

5. How is the feedback for your new album being?
T: Very satisfying. We still get rave reviews from media in Poland and around the globe. We’re especially proud with getting great reviews from Germany – German critics did not like our previous albums, but this time they were very satisfied with what they heard, or so it seems J We get lots of good feedback and support from all over the world, and we’re thankful for it!

6. And are your personally satisfied with the final outcome?
T: Very much. Not only did Janos – our producer – manage to get out the best of all of us, but he also added depth to our sound and our tracks. What is the most satisfying part, is that we made all the arrangements together and anyone had their say. It wasn’t always like that – some former members of our band weren’t often interested in composing the tracks.

7. How could you describe this opus in just 3 words?
T: Eclectic insane metal

8. How has the production process for your new release been?
T: It ran very smoothly. Janos is a top-notch producer and a great motivator. Thanks to him, it only took us a few days to record the tracks and the mixing and mastering process went very fast too!

9. And how do you use to work on the songwriting?
T: Like I said before, we work on it together, all five of us. One of us supplies a riff or two and we take it from there, adding solos, vocals, beats and other elements along the way. That doesn’t include the lyrics, as the guys leave it to me to write them.

10. Finally, what are you near-future?
T: We’re hoping to release our third album next year and go on a tour around Poland, and maybe go abroad for the first time. In the nearest future, we want to release our newest video clip.

11. That’s all from our side, thanks again for taking your time to answer our questions. If you now want to add some final words; feel free to do it.
T: Thank you for the interview! Keep supporting the local music and metal scene, and a big shout out to all readers of Queens of Steel!

Ukrainian label Metal Scrap Records is increasingly integrating with the Polish scene. A new release of label after CRYPTIC and QUO VADIS is a band NEURONIA – yet another member of the partner country of Ukraine for Euro 2012. Original band and this is interesting. Such interesting that we had no choice but to take an interview from this band.

Interview was prepared by Thrashmentor.
Answering: Maciek „Tektur” Nawrot (вокал), Michal „Misiek” Rogala (гитара)

1.Please introduce your band to Ukrainian fans…
Maciek „Tektur” Nawrot (vocals): Hails! We are Neuronia from Warsaw and we salute you! We’ve played since 2003 and we’re trying to take inspiration from many genres of metal music – heavy, thrash, doom, death, and other music genres as well. Throughout the history of the band, our line-up has changed several times, which had a positive impact on the development of our music.
The latest line-up change occurred in January 2011, when Deviant joined on drums and Beton took bass duties. They’re both great musicians and have enriched our sound very much, thanks to their creative input we have made new arrangement for some of our tracks. Our current line-up is Misiek (guitar), Lewy (guitar), Beton (bass), Deviant (drums) and Tektur (vocals). We’re ready to kick some serious ass!

2.Is there any concept that is a core idea for the band’s existence?
Tektur: Our main playing idea, almost since the very beginning of the band, is to inspire ourselves with many music genres and to mix them into a homogenous musical message. Our goal is to make the listener interested in our music and to make him/her find our many influences. And, of course, the music must be hard-hitting, fast and rich in melody – we try to make our music as melodic as possible.
As for lyrical themes, they were quite different over all those years, but generally our lyrics always convey the message of freedom and an individual view on the world, and also encourage free thinking.

3.What are the goals that you pursue? How ambitious are you?
Misiek: We strive to create the best music that we possibly can. We constantly raise the bar for ourselves. We want to reach as many listeners as we can and interest them with our music.
Tektur: We are very ambitious. We often play concerts in small clubs, but on several occasions we had the chance to share big stages with such well-known acts as Tankard, Sabaton or Paul Di’Anno. We want those big events to happen to us as often as possible, so we put a lot of stress on constantly raising our skill and playing technique. We also want each of our records to sound better than the previous one, and I think that so far we have succeeded in it.

4.How steady is the current line-up of the band? How did you all get together? Did you have any previous experience before Neuronia?
Misiek: In recent years our line-up has changed very often – some people left the band or we had to thank them as they didn’t fit in with us. I am the only original member of the band, but I think there’s nothing wrong in changes for better. I think we have finally found a stable line-up, within which we all understand each other greatly and which has common goals.
As for the history: In autumn of 2009, Tektur was invited into one of our rehearsals by our former vocalist Acid, who left a few months later because of musical differences. Lewy joined us in early 2010 – we wanted to seek out a great solo guitarist and quickly we have found that he is perfect for us. And when the former rhythm section left in January 2011 (the drummer wanted to play more classical thrash and the bass player stopped playing for good), we placed an ad on one rock portal and we didn’t have to wait long – Beton and Deviant joined us quickly and thanks to their great skills we’ve played two great shows together as soon as in the end of February. And it gets better all the time!
Tektur: We all have a great deal of playing experience. Since 1997, Beton is the leader of the bone-crunching death metal commando – Mesmerized, he also plays in a grindcore band called Anticipate. Misiek has been around for almost 20 years, he has played in many different line-ups before devoting his time exclusively to Neuronia. Similarly, Lewy has been a member of many bands, e.g. the hardcore outfit Leap of Faith. Deviant leads his grindcore outfit, Anus Magulo, as well as plays drums in the goth-metal band At The Lake. As for me, I debuted in my first band as early as in primary school, and that was a long, long time ago…

5.Poland has a very strong metal scene. How does the international success of Vader and Behemoth stimulate the other Polish bands and your band?
Misiek: I think that all bands – not only in Poland – strive to make a great international career as Behemoth, Vader or Decapitated. The success of these bands made the world’s eyes – or rather ears – turn on the Polish scene. But these bands have reached such a high level of playing and composing skills, that you have to do something really fuckin’ awesome to make a name for yourself and interest metal fans.
Tektur: The bar is raised very high. But we all know that these bands achieved so much primarily because of a great deal of fuckin’ hard work. This motivates us the most, because if they could do it, then you just need to get your ass up and work and with a little bit of luck, we can make it too!

6.Your album, ‘Follow the White Mouse’ was released by Metal Scrap Records, an Ukrainian label. Why did you pick this particular label and what do you expect from this cooperation? I know that the album was also released on other labels – which ones and in which countries? How do the contracts differ in these labels?
Misiek: We chose Metal Scrap Records, because we felt that talks with them were very substantial, so we knew where we’ve stood all the time. MSR is a quickly developing label, and – what is even more important – Nataly and Anatoliy are very committed to what they are doing. We want to work with people who put their hearts into their work. That’s what we expect the most from this cooperation and we already see that it will pay off greatly.
Tektur: In Poland the album was released under the flag of Fonografika, Metal Scrap has the license for the rest of the world. The contracts differed a great deal – Fonografika is basically only the distributor of the album, while we retain all the rights. Metal Scrap is not only the worldwide distributor, but a full-fledged publisher of the record.

7.How often do you do live shows? What is the current situation with gigs in Poland? Is there a drop in the numbers of concert-going fans, just like here in Ukraine?
Misiek: Lately, we have player a little less shows, because we were busy making the new line-up work together, and furthermore we are working on new material. In the spring, we will play a few shows, maybe a few festivals, and we’re looking forward to a tour of Poland in autumn. Then, in winter, we want to hit the studio and record some new material.
Tektur: As for the situation with the concerts in Poland: on one hand it’s better, because more and more really great bands come to our country. On the other hand, it’s true that fans aren’t so eager to go to shows as they used to – maybe it’s exactly because there are so many good gigs? The tendency is less visible in the eastern part of the country – in cities like Lublin, Stalowa Wola, Rzesz?w, Bia?ystok the crowds can still be very large.

8.I think that your label will succeed in organizing a Ukrainian tour for you. Do you have any plans for this? Have you already discussed this matter?
Misiek: There have been initial talks about such a tour and we would really like to visit Ukraine – we’ve heard that the atmosphere of concerts in your country is fantastic. Yet we know that people in Ukraine must get to know our music before they come to our shows. Our friends at Metal Scrap Records know it too and they will surely do the best to get us some great promotion that will prepare the ground for our visit to Ukraine.

Blitz Quitz

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
– The band started in December 2003 as a jam duo with Misiek (rhythm guitar) and Chief (drums) as members. In 2005 Radek joined on bass and vocals and next year the band recorded two demos. The same year Radek left and two new guys joined – Domo on bass and Acid on vocals. In this line-up, the band have recorded their first EP – “First Blood” (2007) and album – “Winter of My Heart (2008). In 2009 Thor replaced Chief on drums and I joined on vocals (Acid left in March next year) and Lewy joined on lead guitar. We put out the next full-length, “Follow the White Mouse” in February 2010. In the meantime, there have been some more line-up changes: Beton replaced Domo on bass, Deviant took over drum duties from Thor in early 2011, only to be replaced by Lukass in the winter of the same year. In this line-up we have recorded the “Insanity Relapse” EP in May 2012 and we are getting ready to record our third album next year.

Misiek is the spiritus movens of the band and the only founding member left in the line-up. Beton combines playing in Neuronia with being the leader of the death metal horde Mesmerized and also handles bass duties in Sphere and Anticipate, and has also been the vocalist of Gortal. Lewy is also playing in a few bands playing lighter rock. Lukass also plays in the melodic death metal band Whichheaven – currently on hiatus. I myself have previous vocal experience with some bands in my hometown of Lublin and in Warsaw.

2. How would you describe your style? Which bands influenced your music?
– There’s no real way of describing it, as it is really a mixture of styles. I would say thrash and heavy metal are the main ingredients, but we also play some lighter rock. Bands? Haha, it would be too many! Let’s just say that Misiek and Lewy are fond of classic thrash, Beton and Lukass are mostly into death metal and I myself listen to everything that is heavy and not only – truth be told, it can be said of everyone of us.

3. Why should a metalhead buy your demos/albums?
– To experience this mixture of styles. We can hit really hard with some no-nonsense riffs, but we also have a melodic side to us. We aren’t afraid of experiments and that is really our main strength. Best, you can listen to it and judge for yourselves: http://neuronia.bandcamp.com/album/insanity-relapse

4. What have you released so far and how were your releases received by the public/media?
– Two demos, two EPs and two full-lengths. We have received the warmest of reviews for our “Insanity Relapse” EP. This fact motivates us to work even harder on the new album. The former releases had mixed reviews, but most of them positive. The public gives us a warm welcome wherever we play, though we have to say that the farther to the eastern side of Poland, the better the reception!

5. Do you play live as well? How’s your live activity so far?
– We’re not counting exactly, but I guess that we have about 150 shows around Poland under our belt, including gigs with Sodom, Tankard, Paul Di’ Anno, Torture Squad, U.D.O. and a few Polish cult bands like KAT, Quo Vadis and many more. We haven’t really played that much in the last two years, as we have been concentrating on the new material. Once we release it, I think our concert activity will increase – that’s the plan.

6. What should labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?
– We are not your regular metal band that sticks to one genre. As I said before, we like to experiment and enrich our sound. We love playing live, improvising and we can easily create a good moshpit! We are also a band that has something to say – I like to think that our lyrics convey important messages.

7. What plans do you have for the near future as a band?
– Record our third album and hit the road!

8. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
– You can listen to our last three releases and buy our stuff via BandCamp: http://neuronia.bandcamp.com (we have lately added a digipack re-release of “Insanity Relapse”).

Daily Metal Webzine

Lost Soul…
