Siegnalem po te plyte bo Grecy z Sunlight mieli grac heavy metal. No i graja, ale jest to odmiana bardzo melodyjna, z duzymi wplywami neoklasycznymi, hard rocka i europejskiego power metalu, oraz z pewna doza progresji i AORu. Gdy czlowiek kojarzy z heavy metalem ostra jazde bez trzymanki, to troche czasu trzeba poswiecic, aby do tej sytuacji sie przyzwyczaic. Pozniej tez nie jest latwo, bo owa roznorodnosc, nie pozwala odebrac jednoznacznie dzwiekow muzykow z Sunlight. Caly ten puzzel zaczal ukladac sie w konkretna calosc, gdy przez przypadek skojarzylem, ze taki “Earh-quake” bardzo przypomina dokonania Royal Hunt. Wlasnie to wyobrazenie, pozwolilo ustawic na odpowiednich torach tworczosc tego heavy metalowego zespolu z Grecji. W tym konktekscie zuplnie inaczej spostrzega sie tez znaczenie progresji w dokonaniach Sunlight. Bowiem greccy muzycy bardzo sprawnie poruszaja sie w swojej roznorodnosci choc zupelnie inaczej niz to sie przyzwyczailismy w wypadku glownych nurtow w progresywnym metalu, czy tez w ambitniejszym power metalu. Wlasnie to stanowi o sile tego zespolu, o ich oryginalnosci i wlasnej sciezce w swiecie muzyki. Swoja wielobarwnosc nie tylko zaznaczaja poprzez dotykanie wielu stylow, ale tez sieggajac po wiele form muzyczny, a takze liczne rozwiazania aranzacyjne. Mam podejrzenia, ze dla fana ogarnieccie takiej ferii dzwiekow jest dosc trudne. Mimo dosc melodyjnej sfery, w ktorej porusza sie band, to ta muzyczna wielorakosc moze byc duza przeszkoda w zdobyciu wiekszej popularnosci, Ogolnie kompozycje sa ciekawe, zagrane rewelacyjnie. Kazdy muzyk, z sekcji rytmicznej, klawiszowiec, gitarzysta i spiewak maja niesamowyty warsztat. Ludzie w studio tez nie zawiedli, przygotowali produkcje, ktora zapewnila “My Own Truth” najwuzsza jakosc. Generalnie mimo obieekcji album ten bardzo mnie zaciekawil, na tyle, ze jestem bardzo zainteresowany dalszym losami Sunlight. No i nie wierzcie tym, co beda starali sie przekonac was, ze ten grecki zespol gra heavy metal. Zdaje sie ze duzo lepiej bedzie go traktowac, jako przedstawiciela ambitniejszego, hard rocka, heavy metalu czy power metalu, a moze nawet melodyjnego progresywnego metalu. Przede wszystkim w ten sposob latwiej traficie do muzyki tej kapeli.

Die aus Athen stammende Truppe hatte bereits vor ein paar wenigen Jahren die EP „Rockin all around“ vorgelegt und lässt nun ein komplettes Album folgen. Ob sie die Meere durchschreiten mögen, um zum kristallenen Palast des Meeresgottes vorzustoßen? Das werden nun die folgenden Zeilen zeigen und die Götter mögen mir beistehen.
Sunlight sind zweifelsohne dem bombastischen, symphonischen Heavy Metal zugehörig und spielen genau jenen Sound wie er schon oft von südeuropäischen Bands jener Breitengrade ins Rollen gebracht wurde. Hauptsächlich sind die Songs im Midtempo angesiedelt und werden durchweg von einem dicht besiedelten Synth-Teppich voran geschoben.
Das Album startet sogleich mit einem hymnischen und kräftigen „Back to life“ und trifft auch sogleich die richtige Spurbreite. Auch in den Folgetracks ist durchaus klar dass dieses Erstwerk keineswegs als Tischfeuerwerk verpuffen sollte. Da das Material gut miteinander arrangiert ist und der ureigene bombastische Heavy Metal teils getragen und auch wieder mit gelösten, aber wohl dosierten Bremspedal zu den Füssen von Poseidon und Athene für klangvolle Momente sorgt.
Dem Album kommt eine ausgewogene, klare und differenzierte Produktion zu Gute und hat die musikalische Klasse der Griechen passend positioniert. Besondere Stärke erlangen diese Südeuropäer unter der Sonne Attika`s mit Songs wie „When I see you“ und „Lonely man`s song“ (gelungener Violinen-Einsatz), die getragen und durchweg von ihrer gewissen Klasse auf diesem Sektor zeugen können. Dennoch haben sie mit dem agilen und kräftigen „Struggle for deliverance“ den für mich stärksten Song des Albums abgeliefert.
Sunlight haben mit ihrer ersten Langrille ein als in Gänze positiv zu bewertendes Album auf den Weg gebracht, musikalisch über jeden Zweifel erhaben. Etwas weniger Synth-Bombast hätte dem Album allerdings auch gut getan und mehr Augenmerk auf das Wesentliche. Aber dies ist nur mein persönlicher Abstrich bei diesem Debut. Weiterhin darf man sagen dass getragenen Elemente auf „My Own Truth“ überwiegen, ein wenig mehr Fahrt könnte das Album dann doch aufnehmen. Aber dies sollte geneigten Hörern nicht in Schrecken versetzen.

Lords Of Metal

It may be the worst economic time to come from Greece nowadays, but musically this country is far from bankrupt. One after another the new bands seem to sprout from the sunny Mediterranean country and one of them is Sunlight. Their debut record ‘My Own Truth’ however seems to give the impression of doubt within the band, which is very much projected on the listener. Sunlight themselves claim to make a mix of hard rock, heavy and power metal. And that’s exactly where the trouble seems to begin.
For those who are fan of hard rock, Sunlight is a very good new addition to the spectrum. With songs like ‘Back To Life’, ‘Eastern Train’ and ‘Earthquake’ there are some very solid hard rock tracks found on this record. Only the keyboards kind of miss the point on those songs. On ‘Eastern Train’ is a very fun kind of duel between the guitars and the keys, but on the other tracks their kind of unnecessary. On the other hand there are a couple of tracks that are more of the power metal kind. Those are more suited for the keyboards than the previously mentioned ones. Unfortunately they are a little bit too soft for real power metal tracks. Title song ‘My Own Truth’ is a softer power ballad, comparable to Helloween, and ‘Follow Your Heart’ is a straight up mix between the hard rock and power metal. The album is very well put together. Musically all is played pretty solid, while the individual tracks are very well written. ‘Eastern Train’ is a very good hard rock song and ‘When I See You’ is the ever-present ballad. Vocalist Dimitris Giannakopoulos isn’t doing a solid job on the entire album. He misses the mark somewhat too often on ‘Struggle For Deliverance’, but he compensates that all right with the high pitched vocals on ‘Rockin’ All Around’.
It is a pity that these Greeks seems to want the best of both worlds on ‘My Own Truth’. Good rock songs, fat power metal tracks, that sounds well, but probably doesn’t work for most fans of the different genres. Perhaps the band would do well to choose for a less varied approach in the future and a more unequivocal next album.

During the 80’s the music world had many bands from different styles. Ok, the predominant style there was the Hard Rock and similar. AOR or Melodic Hard Rock made much success with bands like JOURNEY, SURVIVOR, ASIA and many others. And SUNLIGHT is a Greek band that song is influenced by these bands and using the traditional European Power Metal to release their first full length called “My Own Truth”.
The instrumental is unbelievable especially Makis Kaponis made many beautiful solos and Panos Mourtzinos and Dimitris Kapoukakis did perfect performance. The first song, “Back To Life” had amazing guitar intro by Makis who shows are strong Power Metal influences with European Hard Rock bands like KROKUS with simple but fantastic guitar arrangements. He is the backlight in this song. The singer Dimitris Giannakopoulos are an interesting vocals, but he loses the vocal power during the high notes are hidden by the backing vocals. When you finish to listen it, you start surprising yourself with a super 80’s AOR brand: vocals duets with the track name and striking keyboards lines by Panos Anastapoulos. It’s a visceral song that makes you come back to 80’s and feel the sensation to go to 80’s concerts. Stopping this happiness sensation, you listen the first ballad from this album title track – “My Own Truth”. A beautiful melody with 80’s guitar and keyboards lines with Power Metal vocals. It’s a good choice and this time works very well.
“Eastern Train” is a faster song with awesome keyboards melodies with Power Metal influence more than ever. Power Metal is one of my favorite styles than I can tell you, if you’re fan, you will like this song with all clichés: supersonic high notes, faster guitar and keyboard solos and infectious double bass-driven grooves. Another one ballad called “When I See You” with an incredible instrumental and Dimitris Giannakopoulos shows that his voice is more brilliant when he sings this style, without high notes with super solos that shows that feeling is more important than million notes per second. “Earthquake”, “Rockin’ All Around” and “Struggle For Deliverance” are good songs. But only it.
Don’t bring anything new. And this last one, the intro is very similar STRATOVARIUS’ song called “Hunting High And Low”. I thought he was making a cover of it but then the songs and the next called “Lonely Man’s Song” lose the shine. Sunlight had virtuous musicians, good ideas but they don’t find an owner formula to make different than the other bands. The style they chosen has many, many bands and it’s hard to stand out to the other bands. When they find your own style or own formula, they will be a killer band. Now it’s a good band like the others. Just all.

Por suerte no sólo son malas noticias las que recibimos desde Grecia. Acostumbrados a los últimos bombardeos mediáticos sobre la economía de este país, esta vez, gracias a esta banda helena llamada SUNLIGHT, descubrimos que aún sigue corriendo sangre de metal en la cuna del Mediterráneo.
Con nombre de bebida refrescante de verano, nos encontramos con una banda formada en 2009, la cual nos presentan su primer larga duración, emitido a través de Total Metal Records, tras un anterior EP del 2011 titulado “Rockin all around” (3 temas que vienen contenidos también en este trabajo). Anunciándose ellos mismos como una banda para seguidores de IRON MAIDEN, WHITESNAKE, DEEP PURPLE O HELLOWEEN (un abanico demasiado amplio y poco concreto para mi gusto) ya os adelanto que mas bien no, que nadie se espere un “The Number of the beast” ni un “Future World” (ni por asomo). SUNLIGHT plasman en un mismo lienzo pinceladas de hardrock, con algunos trazos de heavymetal y reflejos ocasionales de powermetal.
El disco se inicia con “Back to live”, donde desde primer momento notamos una producción realmente buena, un sonido de alta calidad que permite poner de manifiesto todas las bondades de esta banda. Es un tema que me ha recordado a bandas punteras actuales del heavy power español, tipo ZENOBIA o DUNEDAIN, mezclando unas guitarras muy melódicas con una voz, en este caso la de Dimitris Giannakopoulus, con unos buenos registros, sintiéndose mas cómodo en las notas altas, pero careciendo de garra y solidez. Un buen cantante que cumple a la perfección en los estribillos melódicos que nos presenta SUNLIGHT, pero que falta esa fuerza para sostener el tema entero y engranar todos los instrumentos. Las guitarras de Makis Kaponis combinan acordes acústicos y notas sueltas con buenos palmmuters y un solo muy bien ejecutado, a resaltar en este tema. Estructura demasiado facilona, con demasiadas repeticiones del estribillo para mi gusto, me ha faltado algún puente o cambio que “rompiera” un poco la estética tan predecible del tema, aún así un buen inicio para arrancar este “My own truth”.
“Follow your heart” es el segundo corte del disco, un tema corto y directo, donde los teclados de Panos Anastopoulus adquieren un protagonismo absoluto, cubriendo ese hueco que deja la ausencia de una segunda guitarra. Es un tema de base mas cañera, con una batería mas presente, más poderosa. Desde ya mismo puedo dejar claro que no es un grupo heavy o power al uso, es más bien una banda de metal melódico o hardrock mas acelerada, con partes mas heavys. Es algo así como el Chameleon de HELLOWEEN, un disco cañero para ser hardrock pero no lo suficiente para ser heavymetal, me explico??.
Continúa el disco con el tema que da título al disco, “My own truth“, con un inicio de melodías de guitarra, que me ha traído a la mente a LACRIMA, una banda canaria que molaba fleje y que muchos de mis paisanos conocerán. Un corte que combina una misma melodía de teclado y guitarra con una voz melosa y envolvente, perfecto para ir en el coche con la chavala. Es como combinar una de las grandes baladas de los SCORPIONS con algún tema de SONATA ARTICA o similar. Mezcla curiosa pero efectiva.
“Eastern train” le mete un poquito de velocidad al disco (que ya hacia falta!!), sonando unos hammonds de fondo que le dan ese toque añejo al tema. Este corte podría haber estado incluido en el Chameleon de HELLOWEEN sin duda, un tema muy bueno, de los mejores del disco. De nuevo la guitarra de Makis se erige en un protagonismo absoluto, a lo guitarhero. Son buenos temas, pero les falta esa chispa, ese punto de mas que hace grande a una banda.
Reducimos de nuevo las revoluciones para volver a una balada con “When I see you“, un tema flojito, que gustará a los seguidores mas melosos del metal, a esos que les gusta encender los mecheros en directo y agitar las manos al aire, pero que, como comentamos antes, les falta ese punto de más, quedándose el tema en sólo un buen intento. Falta darle una vuelta más al tema, redefinir la estructura, aportar más matices y colores…
“Earthquake” es otro buen tema, de esos que podrían sonar en cualquier pub para entretener a los turistas, un buen hardrock y lo dejamos aquí. Un buen tema para tomarse unas birras y pasar el rato con los colegas. Cada vez tengo mas la sensación que estos tíos se han montado una banda para ligar con las pavas y marcarse el rollo (jajajaj!!). “Rockin all around” daba nombre al primer EP que presentaba SUNLIGHT, un inicio de teclados da paso a la fantástica guitarra de Makis, de lo mejorcito del grupo. Este tema me ha parecido de los peores del trabajo, se nota que se compuso en épocas anteriores de la banda.
Y el disco se cierra con “Struggle for Deliverance” y ” Lonely Man´s song”. El primero de estos, se inicia de manera mas power, muy similar a STRATOVARIUS, es el tema que más me ha gustado del disco, se nota que está mas trabajado, con mas velocidad, resaltando el potencial de la banda, muy bueno. “Lonely Man´s Song” es un tema perfecto para cerrar el trabajo, de inicio pausado, con un piano principal y la voz de Dimitris presentando su mejor cara, rollo SAVATAGE en “Believe“, muy molón. Parece que estos dos temas finales me han dejado un mejor sabor de boca que los anteriores, sin duda los mejores temas del disco. SUNLIGHT tienen todavia mucho que aprender y un gran camino que recorrer, pero sin duda tienen las bases necesarias para llegar a la meta.

Irgendwo in den 80ern sind SUNLIGHT steckengeblieben. Die Griechen spielen auf ihrem Debutalbum lupenreinen Metal, der so in den 80ern auch aus Deutschland hatte stammen konnen. Die Melodien sind eingangig, die Songstrukturen nachvollziehbar, fast jeder Refrain geht nach dem ersten Horen ins Ohr. Eine eigene Identitat fallt dabei nicht ab, wen stort das aber schon, wenn er neun erstklassige Songs abbekommt. ,Follow Your Heart‘ geht ordentlich voran, ,My Own Truth‘ nimmt, ahnlich wie die Ballade ,Lonely Man’s Song‘ zum Abschluss, das Tempo etwas raus und gibt dem Horer Zeit, das Feuerzeug hervorzuholen, und ,Earthshake‘ und ,Rockin’ All Around‘ laden zum Tanzen ein.
Langweilig wird einem in den gut 40 Minuten auf keinen Fall. Fur ihre nachste Veroffentlichung sollten SUNLIGHT etwas eigenstandiger werden – auch wenn sich naturlich die Frage stellt, wie man dies in diesem musikalischen Umfeld, in dem eigentlich alles gesagt wurde, noch tun kann. Songwriting haben sie drauf, griffige Melodien scheinen auch ausreichend vorhanden zu sein! Wer guten Melodic Metal sucht, der nicht angestaubt klingt und von vorne bis hinten uberzeugt, greift hier zu!

Det er lite som er sa kjipt a here pa som darlig power metal.
Disse grekerne tilhorer den kategorien, og det er en utfordring a komme gjennom hele plata. Gutta kan Spille, og produksjonen er bra nok, sa totalslakt blir det ikke, men det er gud-sjammerlig kjedelig a here pa. Greitnokatdetikke er originalt og gutta i bandet kan ikke klandres for at skoler i Hellas har bedriten engelskundervis-ning, men nar man skal lage musikk ma man prove a gjore det litt interessant for lytteren. Sunlight veksler mellom typiske power metal-klisjeer og mer «moden» metal, som Kamelot, men uten gode later. Og nar de prover seg pa rock ‘n’ roll i «Eastern Train», er bunnen nedd. Det er rett og slett horribelt a hore pa.

Ein vielversprechendes Album mit dem Titel „My Own Truth“ erreicht die hiesigen Metal-Fans von der Band Sunlight aus Griechenland. Diese vereinen auf ihrem ersten Vollwerk neun Songs, denen man die verschiedenen Einflüsse aus Hardrock, Power Metal und Alternative Metal anhört. Jene Hörer, die sich für Bands wie Edguy, Wisdom und sogar 3 Doors Down begeistern können, sollten nun weiterlesen und Sunlight im Auge behalten, denn hier bahnt sich scheinbar etwas Größeres an.
Ihr Potenzial stellen sie schon im eingängigen Opener „Back to Life“ hervorragend unter Beweis. Passend wechselt Sänger Dimitris Giannakopoulos beim Wort „higher“ in die Kopfstimme und erinnert so unter anderem an Tobias Sammets Bestzeiten. Ebenfalls kristallisiert sich hier die Keyboardpräsenz im Sound der Band Sunlight heraus, die den Hörer auch im Folgenden stets begleiten wird. Das sollte man wissen und auch mögen, allerdings fügen sich die Keyboard-Einsprengsel harmonisch in den Gesamtklang des Albums „My Own Truth“ ein.
Nachdem mit „Follow Your Heart“ teilweise Erinnerungen an die 80er heraufbeschworen werden, nicht zuletzt durch das bereits genannte Keyboardspiel, schließt sich die erste balladeske Nummer an. Der Titeltrack, zu dem auch ein Video gedreht wurde, besitzt mitunter eine poppige Note. Würde es klassische Boybands in der Metalszene geben, Sunlight würden sich mit „My Own Truth“ dafür mehr als prädestinieren. Dies ist jedoch nicht negativ gemeint, denn auch die seichteren Klänge mit Pop-Attitüde beherrscht die Band und wird damit vorrangig die weibliche Hörerschaft für sich gewinnen.
Die hardrockigen Einflüsse hört man schließlich den Rock ’n‘ Roll-lastigen Songs „Eastern Train“ und „Earthquake“ an. Spielfreude pur, handwerklich gut gemacht und zügig gespielt heben sich die beiden Titel von den anderen Songs des Albums ab und bringen Abwechslung. Es ist jedoch eine Geschmacksfrage, ob man das gutheißt oder lieber den straighten Power Metal-Weg bevorzugt. Jener nämlich und die Alternative Metal-Schiene, wie sie im Song „When I See You“ zum Ausdruck gebracht wird, gefallen mir persönlich beispielsweise am besten.
Apropos „When I See You“: Wer sich nicht mehr an die 3 Doors Down Ballade „Here Without You“ erinnert, der wird spätestens mit Sunlights Ballade wieder daran denken müssen, denn phasenweise sind die melodischen und songstrukturellen Parallelen mehr als offensichtlich.
Eine Ballade schließt letztlich auch das Album. „Lonely Man’s Song“ wartet mit Geigen auf und stellt den angenehmen, aber mit sehr viel Vibrato daherkommenden Gesang ins Zentrum des musikalisch reduzierten Geschehens.
Insgesamt gibt es viele schöne ruhige Momente auf „My Own Truth“, ebenso aber auch treibende Songs, die sofort ins Ohr gehen und mitreißen. Abwechslung wird hier großgeschrieben, ein aussagekräftiges Bandprofil bleibt dabei jedoch noch ein wenig auf der Strecke. Zu oft hört man in Songs Ideen, die es so oder ähnlich bereits von anderen Bands gibt, sodass zeitweilig der Eindruck entsteht, einer sehr guten Coverband zuzuhören. Dies und die Tatsache, dass die unterschiedlichen Genre-Einflüsse pro Song ihren Einsatz finden, statt miteinander kombiniert zu werden, spricht dafür, dass Sunlight an einem straighteren musikalischen Auftreten noch arbeiten könnten. Zudem hätte der Sound noch satter ausfallen können. Davon abgesehen liegt mit „My Own Truth“ aber ein Album vor, das trotz der minimalen Kritik nach Dauerrotation schreit und schon jetzt den Wunsch nach mehr Material der Griechen aufkommen lässt.

Die Griechen SUNLIGHT um den ehemaligen Secret Illusion-Sänger Dimitris Giannakopoulos bieten auf ihrem Debüt (eine MCD ging 2011 voraus) freundlich melodischen Metal, dem es aber nicht an der notwendigen Härte fehlt, und die sehnsüchtige Note vieler Stücke nimmt zusätzlich für “My Own Truth” ein, ohne dass Album oder Band Bäume ausreißen würden. Originell klingt weder das eine noch die andere, aber von Gesichtslosigkeit kann auch keine Rede sein. Die neun Songs wurden hörbar liebevoll auf Hooks hin komponiert, sind aber nicht allzu vorhersehbar, auch weil SUNLIGHT hier und dort Progressive Rock antäuschen. Davon unabhängig läuft das Material teilweise verboten schnell rein, insbesondere ‘Rockin’ Around’ (okay, könnte auch am dämlichen Text liegen) und das mit Orgel versehene Highlight ‘Eastern Train’. Auch wenn die Gruppe nicht auf der typischen Euro-Schiene der Kinderlied-Refrains fährt, dürften speziell Fans von mittleren Helloween und frühen Edguy Freude an “My Own Truth” haben.

Hard Rock sound, combined with Heavy and Power Metal elements, reflects the band’s many different influences. A strong rhythm section, melodic guitars, leading keyboards, and wide-range vocals deliver nine songs full of cool riffs, catchy melodies and memorable choruses. For fans of: Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden and Helloween!
Attractive vocal melodies, combined with grooving beats and thrilling solos, are the most powerful features of the album.
Sunlight is a Hard Rock & Heavy/Power Metal band from Athens, Greece. It was founded during the summer of 2009 and has some changes in the lineup for this time.
The band has performed live more than 50 times the last 5 years not only in well-known Rock clubs of Athens, but also in famous annual festivals. So far, some of the most important moments in the band’s career are the live performances all over Greece and the supporting act in the performance of the Italian Progressive Metallers Dark Quarterer in Athens on the 18th of November 2012.
On the 9th of December 2011, the band’s first EP, “Rockin’ All Around”, was released, including three tracks of their upcoming full-length CD. The EP has received excellent reviews and found remarkable success in Greece. It was also distributed in Japan.
In 2015 Sunlight’s first full-length album, “My Own Truth”, was released by Total Metal Records, a division of Metal Scrap Records. Moreover, the video-clip of the song “My Own Truth” was presented a few weeks before the release-date. Sunlight are currently preparing for numerous live shows for the promotion of their first full-length album.
